“LOV’IN ON MY MIND”
Okay, so I admit it, this song is a bit wild, and not girl like. But, here is how I figured it. This song probably has more truth in it, than anyone will ever admit. I remember the first time I sang it in public. My band freaked out, especially my bass player, Chad Watson.
MY BAND LEADER, CHAD WATSON, FREAKED OUT WHEN I FIRST ANG THIS SONG OUT AT A GIG! HE TOLD ME, “YOU ARE A GIRL! GIRLS DO NOT SAY THINGS LIKE THAT!”
He was all like, “You can not sing that song. You are a girl. And, you sing country music.” Of course, he also would tell me night after night, but I never listened to him, “Susanne, you really should not wear your skirts that short. You are tempting men. You are creating sin.” But I was not running around nor dating or being promiscuous.
Don’t get me wrong, we love Chad, as you can see he produced, played many instruments, and even sang harmonies on several of my works in this CD. “He’s special”. He actually inspired me to be more lady-like. But, here was the deal. First of all he would not date any girls from the bars. He was single at that time. We were playing all over the place, and we were also the house band at the Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens. (I think that is the city.) One reason he claimed not to date anyone at the clubs was because his father, who was a musician, told him that any girl he would meet in a bar would ultimately feel let down once the cowboy’s hat came off and that a musician can never hold the magic when the daylight comes, as “they” say. Okay, fine. But the scoop is, that Chad, darling, was dating a different woman almost every night. He had a new woman at every gig. So, I was like, well, so okay, they wore long dresses, so what, but what were they all doing when they left the club with Chad. So, this song was almost like a challenge to him.
I CREATED THIS SONG WHILE PLAYING AS THE HOUSE BAND AT THE “SAN FERNANDO BOWLING ALLEY”, which has been one of my favorite gigs. I LOVED OUR AUDIENCE THERE. THESE SPANISH PEOPLE BROUGHT ALL THEIR RELATIVES. WE HAD SO MUCH FUN!!!
We started playing at the San Fernando Bowling Alley. I had met the owner while I was doing a weekly country night at the Radisson Hotel in Agoura, Ca. Well, the first night we showed up to play, the place was filled with Hispanic young people who really were not into country music. My guitarist thought we should leave. But my drummer, Jeff Winter, saved the day!
MY DRUMMER WAS “JEFF WINTER,” ONE OF THE BEST DRUMMERS I HAVE EVER HAD THE BLESSING TO PLAY WITH!!!!
The club was giving us free drinks; Jeff was happy. He was and is one of the best drummers! He used to crack me up when he would have a few drinks. If he had decided he didn’t like someone in the audience, he just might throw one of his drum sticks across the room. But anyway, at this first gig, he saved the day!!! He said, “Let’s open the set with Hey, Baby Que’ Paso and Susie you sing your Daddy, Where Are You Song”. We did! And this group loved us. I ended up giving up the casino gig for this bowling alley. The tips were the best I have ever earned. And, I fell in love with this audience. These young guys and girls, tattoos and all, brought their mom’s, dad’s and every relative. We really had fun!!!
But I thought about how could I tell in a song my feelings as a girl about how guys are constantly whistling, or smiling at us, and we “like it.” We have the feelings of mutual admiration or else you guys would never get anywhere, but yet, I hope I would never act in a manner that would hurt the man I really love. So I thought I will write it as I see it, and I used the Freddy Fender song as my rhythm. I wanted a song to sing at this club that would get everyone going. It worked. So I hope all of you just have fun with it, and realize that God made men and he made women, and we are the same in our hearts. And it is okay to smile and laugh in this world, but not hurt anyone we love, nor act in any way that we wouldn’t do when we are with the person we love. So enjoy it girls, give it back, and for a moment “play!”
I Get Lov’in On My Mind???? That is a question to be asked, isn’t it????? Recently I was at a party and sang this song. This really straight, neat lady started giggling. I knew I had reached a soft spot in this woman. This song right then became very special to me.
Have a beautiful day!!!!
