“HILLBILLIE MAN”

THIS SONG WAS GIVEN TO ME BY THIS “HILLBILLIE” COUPLE.
WhAT A BLESSING!

This song came from the hearts and souls of so many men and women I have met singing at truck stops and trucking companies. But in Ontario, CA at the Truck Stops of America, in particular, one fine afternoon, I met this interesting couple. They were hillbillies, real hillbillies, but the cutest, sweetest couple I have ever encountered. They both wore bib overalls. Well, every time, it so seemed that I played there, I was running into these two adorable people. And we became friends. The wife became my agent, and her husband, my bodyguard. I had just written a real, from the heart kind of song, and the thought of creating something, in honor of these two, just felt like fun, which I needed right then.

I LOVE BLUEGRASS AND CAJUN MUSIC. AND, HERE WERE THE WORDS THAT WOULD WORK TO BRING THIS PURE FORM OF MUSIC INTO A STORY THAT SHOULD WARM HEARTS.

I wanted the music to be very back-porch, fiddle, lighthearted, almost bluegrass. No! - full, blown bluegrass! And so my little story began. I wanted him to be what he was, and her to be so proud of him, as I had seen in this couple. See, they did not care if they were too fat, or not that pretty. They loved each other. Their passion I envied.

THIS COUPLE WOULD BE IN THE “SHOWERS” AT THIS TRUCK STOP FOR HOURS. I WAS LIKE, “WHAT ARE THEY DOING FOR SO LONG.” LOVE BIRDS, THEY WERE!

They waited, so passionately, for their shower turn to come up at the truck stop. You just knew that these two were going to go in that shower and have themselves a really great time. Sometimes they would not come out for hours. I would be like, what are they doing? They were not “pretty people.” But, I truly believe, God love them, they were the happiest couple I have ever known, other than Michael and I, oh yes!!!!! ----don’t go there -----!!!!!

So! . . . . Originally I wrote a lot of verses, and did not know how to put it all together…….Then I came up with the idea of tagging each verse with “He’s my hillbilly man.” Because “that thought” is the essence of the song. This man is her love. But I also knew I needed a real chorus. So, the reconstruction of this song seemed endless. It took me quite awhile before I felt it was ready.

I KEPT REWRITING AND REWRITING. IT TOOK A LONG TIME FOR THIS ONE TO PULL ALL TOGETHER, AND BE RIGHT. TAGGING THE ENDS OF EACH VERSE FINALLY MADE IT ALL HAPPEN.

I rearranged it for what seemed like forever, experimenting with the music and composition of words. But, I hope you like it. I know for sure my two “hillbillie” friends loved it and me.

NEXT TIME YOU SEE BIB OVERALLS OR JUST A COUNTRY LOOKING KIND OF PERSON, KNOW THAT MAN OR WOMAN IS PROBABLY ONE OF GOD’S FAVORITE ANGELS ON EARTH. AND PRAY THAT ONE DAY YOU WILL FIND A PIECE OF THE CONTENTMENT THAT SOME OF THESE PEOPLE HOLD.

So when you see a couple of hillbillies hanging out, you think of what their real life might be. God made them honest, hard-working souls that rely on each other in the craziness that all us other creatures present. Give them a handshake, or just a smile, because I know that these folks are cherished by our God above.
